A.P.Polo - "Fridays for Future" - Hamburg (Germany) - Street Art/Photography. Fridays for Future (in the original Swedish "SKOLSTREJK FÖR KLIMATET") is a global social movement based on pupils and students who campaign for the most comprehensive, rapid and efficient climate protection measures possible in order to still be able to comply with the United Nations' 1.5-degree target agreed at the World Climate Conference in Paris in 2015 (COP 21). Following the example of initiator Greta Thunberg, students take to the streets on Fridays during school hours to protest. The protest takes place worldwide and is organised by the students; for example, on the first globally organised climate strike on 15 March 2019, almost 1.8 million people reportedly took part in FFF's demonstrations. In the meantime, numerous support organisations have formed regionally, nationally as well as globally, in particular Scientists for Future. The aim of the climate protests is to draw attention to climate policy grievances and to initiate measures for climate protection. In particular, the aim is to ensure compliance with the Paris Agreement. According to FFF's own statement, the school strikes are directed against the failure of those politically responsible in the face of man-made climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions. The consequences of climate change pose a "real threat to the earth and humanity" and threaten the future of the demonstrators and future generations. Climate policy should not only refer to corporations that promote CO2 emissions through coal mining, but especially to the people who suffer from the consequences and have no clear, secure future ahead of them. Climate policy is thus seen as social policy. According to the FFF, the protest is not directed against schools and universities, but is intended as a call to action. There is no need to learn for a future that is not worth living. The FFF attaches more value to these existential requirements than to attending school on Fridays. Climate change does not wait for graduation from university or school. The core demand is: "Act now - so that we have a future! The main sub-goals of the protests include: Ending fossil fuel extraction as part of an energy transition; Abolishing subsidies for fossil energy production; Increasing investment in renewable energies; Expansion of local public transport as part of a transport turnaround. Furthermore, the right to vote should be acquired at the age of 16 in order to expand the participation opportunities of young people. For the first time on 20 August 2018, Greta Thunberg, then a 15-year-old climate change activist, refused to attend class. She then sat, initially for a period of three weeks, in front of the Swedish Parliament building in Stockholm every day during class time and displayed a sign reading "Skolstrejk för klimatet". On 8 September, Thunberg announced that she would continue her school boycott on Fridays after the general elections on 9 September 2018 until Sweden's climate policy complied with the principles of the Paris Climate Agreement.One of the hashtags she used was #FridaysForFuture. Through her protest, she generated international attention, so that groups formed in various cities around the world to join the movement she initiated. In Germany, the first protest took place on 7 December 2018 in Bad Segeberg. The subsequent protests on 14 December in Kiel and other cities received a lot of media attention for the first time. Starting in Sweden, actions took place in Australia, England, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, France, Switzerland, Austria, Ireland and Scotland.The movement then reached global proportions in mid-March 2019, with an additional few hundred protesters in Japan, Mexico, Chile, Philippines, Vanuatu and India. On 28 November 2019, the European Parliament declared a climate emergency.
